Our Girls Project curriculum for each developmental stage — elementary, middle, and high school — is infused with strategies that promote effective communication, problem solving skills, critical thinking, and creativity. Each of our theme-based workshops include activities that engage girls in discussion and action, providing them with an opportunity to grow closer as allies and become more confident in their ability to address and work through the issues affecting them.
Our curriculum consists of a Teachers Guide for facilitators and complimentary Participant Journals for girls that include workshop exercises involving reflection, free writing, drawing, and collage. The following curricular themes are handled in an age appropriate way for each GP group:
Girl Talk – an open discussion with girls about the issues that matter to them.
The Gender Box –Stopping Stereotypes – an examination of how stereotyping limits girls’ choices, belief systems, and identities.
Media Mania – an exploration of the ways in which the media dictates how gender is portrayed and perceived. Girls learn how to analyze, resist, and counteract media messages.
Body Image – an open forum for girls to discuss openly and honestly how they view their bodies. Together, girls begin to redefine beauty according to their own terms.
Teasing, Bullying, Flirting, & Harassment – a discussion about how teasing and bullying impacts girls in their homes, schools and on the street. Girls begin to acquire and practice using different tools for dealing with harassment.
Power & Dreams – A look at different kinds of power in the world and how girls can gain the power to realize their dreams.
Body & Soul – a workshop that explores how girls can take care of themselves – both inside and out.
The Real World of Work – a look at what kinds of work women do and why. Girls also explore the dreams they have about their own career paths.
Our Changing Bodies – a careful look at girls’ anatomy, developmental changes, and reproductive issues including menstruation and self-protection.
The ‘S’ Word (Sex Ed) – age appropriate workshops that address sexuality and sex.
Healthy Relationships – an exploration of how to build and develop healthy relationships in many settings.
Women in History – a workshop that tells the story of inspiring women throughout history.
Public Girl – a workshop series in which girls develop their own social action projects and performances that bring the lessons of The Girls Project to the public.
