Mission
The Girls & Boys Projects is an educational organization dedicated to bringing gender-based empowerment programs to young people in public schools and community-based organizations throughout New York City and beyond.
Our programs — The Girls Projects & The Boys Project — engage youth around gender and other social issues through democratic, learner-centered curricula and workshops. Our educational approach revolves around creating a safe space for young people to find their voice, develop self-awareness, understand the world around them, and become advocates for social change.

The Girls Project (GP) is an empowerment program for elementary, middle, and high school girls. Its purpose is to build on the strength and confidence that girls naturally possess. By exploring topics such as, teasing and bullying, media stereotypes, body image, puberty, and sexuality, GP participants learn how to be healthy, confident girls who are active in their communities. At each developmental level, the Girls Project creates a safe space for girls to work through their questions and receive support they need in the process of becoming strong young women.
The Boys Project (BP) is a "no girls allowed" program for elementary, middle, and high school boys. In a safe space free of social pressure and constraints, boys examine issues such as, violence, fear, media messages, body image, puberty, sexuality, and what it means to "be a man" in today's world. Boys engage in these topics through music, games, dialogue, and presentations. By asking questions and exploring issues important to them, boys realize they are not alone in the often difficult process of growing up and becoming the men they want to be.
In order to encourage the expansion of gender-specific programming in public schools and community based organizations, we offer the following educational programs and materials:
-
The Girls & Boys Projects – Each project is a fifteen to twenty-five week program designed for public elementary, middle and high schools that can be implemented either during the school day or after-school. Contact Javaid Khan at javaid@gp-bp.org for the Boys Project; and JuleJo Ramirez at julejo@gp-gp.org for the Girls Project.
-
Train-the-Trainer Programs – Our goal is to encourage teachers and community based organizations (CBOs) to integrate Girls & Boys Projects’ methodology into their curricula and programs. Twice a year, in the fall and spring, we run a day-long training session in New York City for individuals and CBOs, who want to learn more about our curricula and how to run a gender-specific program. Throughout the year, we also travel to schools and CBOs to deliver training sessions and program support. For more information about our Train-the-Trainer Programs please contact JuleJo Ramirez at julejo@gp-bp.org or 212.505.3184.
-
Curriculum Materials – Girls Project and Boys Project Teacher Guides and Participant Journals have been created to coincide with our fifteen to twenty-five week program. The Girls Project elementary and middle school Teacher Guide and Participant Journal as well as The Boys Project middle school Teacher Guide and Participant Journal are available for purchase and/or distribution. For more information please contact JuleJo Ramirez at julejo@gp-bp.org or 212.505.3184.

GP/BP Website – By 2009, our goal is to create an interactive website that will provide those interested in initiating The Girls and/or Boys Project in their schools and communities with online tools and support.
