Our Boys Project curriculum for each developmental stage — elementary, middle, and high school — is infused with strategies that promote effective communication, problem solving skills, critical thinking, and creativity. Each of our theme-based workshops include activities that engage boys in discussion and action, providing them with an opportunity to grow closer as allies and become more confident in their ability to address and work through the issues confronting them.
Our curriculum consists of a Teachers Guide for facilitators and complimentary Participant Journals for boys that include workshop exercises involving reflection, free writing, drawing, and collage. The following curricular themes are handled in an age appropriate way for each BP level:
Boy Talk – an open-ended rap session about the kinds of issues boys want to talk about and explore.
The Gender Box – Stopping Stereotypes – a look at the way boys (and girls) are limited by gender expectations. In this session boys also learn how to resist stereotypes and stereotyping.
Media Mania – an examination of the role of the media – T.V., video games, movies, and magazines – play in dictating what it means to be a boy in today’s society.
Who’s the Man? – an exploration of different male role models.
Body Image – a workshop that provides boys with the opportunity to discuss how they perceive and feel about their bodies. Boys also identify who and what influences the way they see themselves.
Got the Power – a look at different types of power dynamics.
Teasing & Bullying – a discussion about how and when teasing crosses the line. Boys also learn different ways to handle being teased or bullied.
Changing Bodies – a careful look at boys’ anatomy and development changes affecting their bodies and lives.
The ‘S’ Word – (Sexuality & Sex Ed) – age appropriate workshops that address boys’ questions about sexuality and sex.
The Real World of Work – a look at what kinds of work men and women do and why. Boys also explore the dreams they have about their own career paths.
Conflict Resolution – an examination of ways boys can resolve conflicts creatively and non-violently.
Public Boy – a workshop series in which boys develop their own social action projects that bring the lessons of The Boys Project to the public.
